"It's What I Do" -- First Impressions

Reading the first couple of chapters of Linsey Addaro's book, It's What I Do: A Photographer's Life of Love and War, is intense and intriguing. From the moment one reads the Prelude, it's easy to tell that the career that Linsey Addaro had chosen is a career that takes full dedication and courage to simply complete the task. Being a conflict photographer is a dangerous job, but reading the way that these dangers motivate her is charming. Her being there, in the moment, when war is happening, she is able to capture the fighting and document what's going on first-handedly. It truly is impressive. Throughout the book, she also mentions what she was always taught growing up; keep doing what you love and things will fall into place. That's obviously not the exact quote, but it summarizes the thought. This thought helped Linsey realize, after years of being indecisive, that she wanted to be a photojournalist.

Week 10: Blog Forum

1) I think this photo of a woman standing in front of the capitol building would be my favorite photo I shot this term. 2) This photo stands out to me because the surroundings and environment are so nicely placed and is correspondent to the subject, especially with the excellent lighting of midday. 3) It reflects what I have learned in this journalism class because it captures an entire scene, which I realized is the whole point of photography. 4) Throughout this term, I've learned that to take a good photo, one needs to to get the best perspective of what really shows what is going on. With this in mind, whenever I try to shoot some photos, I know now to take several different photos from several different angels. I also learned that it's okay to go places and just start taking lots of pictures, that I don't have to be concerned of the people around me unless they are my subject. Ruby LaToya Frazier

Ruby LaToya Frazier is an award-winning photographer. She was born in Braddock, Pennsylvania in 1982. Braddock is a rather run-down and poverty-stricken town. Braddock had a major influence on the kind of subjects she wanted to photograph. Frazier works in photography, video, and performance to show visual representations of industrialism, rustbelt revitalizations, environmental justice, healthcare inequality, and communal history. She shoots photos that open people's eyes of what is really going on in the world. However, she is currently an Associates Professor of Photography at the School of Art Institute of Chicago, though she has previously held other academic and cultural positions, including positions at Yale University of Art. Ruby LaToya Frazier has several pieces of popular and recognized work. Some of her most famous collections include The Notion of Family, Gray Area, and Flint Lives Matter.
